Cycling Harris Beach to Crescent City, California

The easiest day of cycling to date. With 32 miles of riding, we only had 444 feet of elevation to climb.

That’s nothing!!

Today was bittersweet though. We said goodbye to Maarten and crossed over to California, meaning we would have some harder climbs and warmer temps!

But wow, how great it felt to have cycled the entire length of Oregon! We finished today in awe and excitement of what we had accomplished to this point, and what the future rides would hold!

We can’t even explain how great we feel in this picture. This photo means so much to us!

Pacific Coast Highway Day 13 Journal Entry

Tuesday 18 Aug 2015 21:49

Day 13: This morning we woke up very relaxed because it was an easy day and Grandma Frankie would be picking Maarten up.

We went down to Brookings Harbor marina for lunch at our favorite fish and chips restaurant. The whole morning with grandma was super nice, sunny, and hot. But after we ate lunch and put on our cycling gear the fog rolled in and it became very cold. We said our goodbyes, our good travels and, our thank you’s, then grandma and Maarten drove off as Heather and I rode toward our next destination of Crescent City.

There wasn’t much to see other than the fact of us crossing over the Oregon/California border.

We rode the entire length of Oregon and half the length of Washington and now we were in California… So crazy!!

The fog prevented us from seeing the ocean most of the day, so the ride became more about our conversations and riding right next to each other than staring out at the beautiful scenery. This nights’ accommodation was provided by a kind lady named Katie who runs St. Paul’s Episcopal Church here in Crescent City, California.

This day was an easy day of riding of only 32 miles and a measly 444 ft of elevation gain. Good thing we had an easy day because tomorrow will be about the same distance with 8 times the elevation gain as today.

The total distance is 628.88 miles.

Cycler’s Tips for Cycling Harris Beach to Crescent City | PCH Day 13

  • Today you cross the Oregon/California Border. When you do the border crossing you may be asked if you have fruit with you. Be sure to eat it all before you cross the border, or just purchase fruit once in California as they will take fruit from you at the border!
  • The “Oregon Coast Bike Route” peels off highway 101 just before crossing into California, don’t take this route, it’s nothing special and just adds extra miles. Just stick to Highway 101 instead!
  • There’s a great Warm Shower stay at a church in Crescent City. Be sure to contact the hosts a few days in advance to reserve your spot at their church!
