**I will be speaking mostly about the GoPro Hero 9 and Hero 8 models because those are the ones I own. Luckily for you, if you have recently purchased any of the newest GoPro action cameras; the GoPro Hero 10 and GoPro Hero 11. Everything in this post is interchangeable between the GoPro 9, GoPro 10, and GoPro 11.
However, if you currently own the GoPro Hero 12 Black, the overall footprint and size slightly decreased. Therefore, you may not be able to use some of the items like the dive housings for your new workhorse. Just make sure to select the correct size for your GoPro 12 action camera!
The action camera company, fortunately, made a slightly better camera (GoPro 10 & 11) into the exact same body as its predecessor. Nonetheless, many of the GoPro accessories below are interchangeable with most, if not all GoPro Models. Housings will be specific to their respective GoPro models, minus the 9, 10, and 11!

Lighting will be your biggest issue when hitting the ocean or some other deep body of water. At just 13.5 feet below the water’s surface, you already have 50% less light due to an inverse relationship between light and water depth. Yet, depth isn’t our only culprit. If you plan on diving in some underwater caves, cenotes, offshore wrecks, or even at night. Then lighting up your scene will be essential! Skimping out on the lighting is the worst; it will affect your whole experience if you do.
The other issue is whether or not that body of water needs to be color-corrected with an underwater filter. These are two things you will certainly need to figure out before buying a GoPro accessory for diving.
- A good rule-of-thumb is to use a red filter for blue water hues at depths of 15-75 feet. Use a magenta filter for green water hues at depths of 15-75 feet. And use a light-red or orange filter for snorkeling and shallow waters of 2-15 feet.
- Shallower→use any or none.
- Deeper→use the corresponding color of the water to filter appropriately and ADD more LIGHTING!!!

However, if you plan to dive lower than ~75 feet, then adding LED light(s) to illuminate your subject and area is essential. It will significantly play in your favor if you do. You will need to figure this out before moving on to underwater protection.

GoPro Accessories for Diving | Underwater Protection & Housings
Straight out of the box, your GoPro is waterproof. But only since the release of the GoPro Hero4 Session. Every model before it required an external housing. Fortunately, we are living in the future and everything electronic is pretty much waterproof to some degree. But don’t get too laxed with how you use your camera in water without an underwater housing or protection case especially when diving!
Most of the newer GoPro Hero action cameras ( GoPro hero5 black, GoPro hero6 black, GoPro hero7 black, GoPro hero8 black, and GoPro hero9 black ) are only capable of going underwater to a depth of 33 feet / 10 meters without possible damage occurring. With a couple of exceptions, the GoPro Max and GoPro Fusion are the only cameras restricted to going down to 16 feet / 5 meters. However, as soon as you introduce an underwater protective housing to any of those GoPro cameras, the depth can increase to ~200 feet or more.
