When I say everything in Joseph, Oregon took us by surprise, I really mean everything did.
The accommodation and food matched how good the views in Joseph are. And, we were pleasantly surprised by the price points of all the food and drinks we enjoyed.
We visited these restaurants over the course of five days in Joseph, and trust me, when I say serving sizes are large, they really are absolutely massive — which on two occasions made the food we got out actually be an entire second meal later!

Plan Your Meals Ahead Of Time
It’s worth noting that you should plan where you’re eating each night ahead of time. I don’t mean make reservations, but just look at opening days and see where you can eat and when.
We met a couple who had to just go back to the same restaurant two nights in a row because they didn’t realize so many places are closed Monday and Tuesday.
Don’t let this be you. Be sure to check opening times for when you’re visiting to ensure you can enjoy each of the places below!

Where To Eat Breakfast In Joseph, Oregon
Kokanee Inn Bed & Breakfast

We stayed at the Kokanee Inn for two nights, and honestly, we wished we had booked a longer stay! The breakfast was phenomenal both mornings. And holy smokes, the menu for the rest of the week looked amazing too — think bison breakfast tacos!
Each morning, Madeline, the owner of the inn, comes in and makes breakfast for her guests. The meals are homemade and not your average eggs-and-bacon-style breakfasts.
She offers frittattas, ricotta cheese pancakes, bison breakfast tacos, and more.
While you’re in Joseph, do yourself a favor and stay at the Kokanee Inn to not only enjoy the inn but also to get swept away by the breakfast each morning.
Where To Eat Brunch / Lunch
Cheyenne Cafe

- Opening Times | Open daily 6:00 AM – 2:00 PM
After checking out of our stay at the Kokanee Inn, we ended up walking around town a bit and stumbled upon the Cheyenne Cafe.
This cafe drew us in immediately, but was closed for the day, and we already had breakfast. So we knew, the following morning we would come back into town and have a nice brunch here.
And let me tell you, the brunch did not disappoint. We started with the cinnamon roll, which has been featured in national publications, and that alone would seal the deal for me to tell you to go there.
The cinnamon roll was probably the second best cinnamon roll we’ve ever had, the first being a a shop in Pismo Beach.
Jay got the biscuits and gravy, and I had the chicken fried steak, and both were great. The fresh homemade biscuits literally melt in your mouth, and the meals were both huge!
We had enough leftovers for a full meal the following day.
Where To Grab Dinner In Joseph
Stubborn Mule Saloon

Okay, I know I just said the brunch option was a huge portion, but at the Stubborn Mule, their portions are MASSIVE!
Basically everything on the menu is offered as a full or half, and yes, that even includes the burgers! We were both so confused, we had to ask.
“Do you just cut the burger in half?” The waiter couldn’t really explain it. He just said it was less, like a smaller portion.
With us having a fridge and stove to reheat leftovers, we both opted for the full portion of meals. And holy smoke, they were full!
The burger was served on a large sqaure plate, and it was literally half of the square. I was legitemetly a foot long burger!
Aside from the size, the flavor was fantastic! You really get what you pay for here, and again, we had leftovers for us to both have a completely second meal!
Where To Eat Taco Tuesday
Slack

- Opening Times | Taco Tuesday, regular menu on other days of the week generally open 11:00 – 9:00
We had absolutely zero intentions of going to Slack. We were simply walking around downtown Joseph, taking photos of the many statues and cute buildings, and Slack’s Taco Tuesday pulled us in.
I mean, how could we pass up on a $3 marg and not your average Taco Tuesday menu?
They offer hard tacos, soft tacos, nachos, double-decker tacos, crunchwraps.. you get the idea. When we asked the waitress about the menu, she said her dad owns the restaurant, and his first job was at Taco Bell, so he created the menu from those recipes.
And he freaking nailed it!
The atmosphere here is lively, and definitely worth popping in on a Tuesday as Stubborn Mule isn’t open for dinner!
Where To Drink In Joseph, Oregon
Stein Distillery

- Cost | Free tasting up to four drinks, and $7 cocktails
- Opening Times | Open Daily 11:00 – 5:00
Stein Distillery is located on the far end of town, a couple of blocks before the main downtown Joseph area. This distillery has a pretty good system going on.
They allow everyone to sample up to four drinks. They mainly make whiskey, but also have vodka, rum, and mixers.
The vodka and rum were both really good, and as Scotch lovers, the whiskey wasn’t too bad either. We are just a bit impartial with our whiskey tastings after living in Scotland!
Aside from popping in for a free tasting, you can actually get cocktails there too. They have around five cocktails on the menu, and they actually call them mini-cocktails because they’re so small.
But, after drinking cocktails all over the world, I think the price for what you get ratio is pretty spot on. And the sour is really good!
It’s an interesting place to pop into, but a fun experience to have tasting all their drinks. Three other groups of people came in while we were sampling drinks, and they all walked away with a bottle, so be prepared to buy ;).
A Couple Things To Note
Check Opening Times | Again, be sure to check on Google to see opening times and plan your outings around which places are actually open that day.
Card Accepted – Cash Preferred | On more than one occasion, we saw signs that stated cash was preferred, though cards were accepted.
Enterprise | We heard the best restaurants in the county are in Enterprise, a short drive out of Joseph. However, we also were told by people we met that they weren’t too excited about the restaurants. So who knows.
Grocery Shopping | There is a store right on the main street of Joseph with all your basic grocery and snack needs. It’s a small town though, so that means you’ll see higher prices than normal. The closest bigger grocery store is Safeway in Enterprise, but supposedly, food only gets delivered there once a week, so we suggest packing food and drinks before getting out to this area.
Donut Shop | There’s a donut shop in town that we read great things about. But honestly, after having the cinnamon roll at Cheyenne Cafe, if you’re after something sweet— have that instead!
Where To Go Next
We really enjoyed our time in Joseph. So much so, we actually extended our stay and camped a couple extra nights in the area. Anytime you can get to Joseph, do it… but maybe try for more days than you think!
