Our first time driving through Germany, I was constantly on the hunt for those cute stereotypical German villages. After our friend in Hamburg told us those villages are more in the southwestern bit of Germany, my hopes of finding a traditional German village were lost! However, to my surprise, we found all the things I was dreaming of and more when we stumbled upon Lubeck, Germany.

We had pulled off the main motorway to find a place to wild camp for the night and as we rounded the corner, I got tears in my eyes. The German home I was looking forward to seeing while driving through Germany was right in front of my eyes!

Pulling into the nearest parking lot, I turned to Jay and told him we had to stop and enjoy the view. Perfect time for a cuppa and just soaking in the moment of gratitude that this was, in fact, our life!

Wild Camping / Overnight Parking in Lubeck Germany
Getting back on the road in search of a parking spot for the night, we were in awe of the one we found. We had absolutely no plans to actually visit Lubeck, but when we parked along the cutest little pond and jetted out to catch the sunset, we both knew we had to stay and explore Lubeck the next day!

Sunset in Lubeck Germany
Everything from our stop in Lubeck was straight out of a fairytale. I mean, just look at this amazing sunset!

Waking up, we were giddy with excitement as embarked on a day of exploring Lubeck. Neither of us knew a thing about the city, and we could only imagine what was in store after all the cuteness we experienced the night before just outside of Lubeck.

A Step Back In Time Visiting Lubeck
Immediately upon crossing the river into Lubeck, we had one of those pinch-me moments. We could tell the village was soon going to be a favorite place in Germany.
It felt like we took a step back in time and were in the medieval era. With tiny cobblestone streets, sculptures and puppets hanging along the walls, and old brick buildings, the romance and charm swept us off our feet.

Lubeck Old Town
We soon found ourselves getting lost in Lubeck’s Old Town, and simply let the spires on the tops of buildings guide us through the cobblestone streets.

What To Eat In Lubeck, Germany
Finding something to fuel the rest of our day came easier than planned. When we approached the main square in Lubeck, there was a bustling market, offering many choices of food for our hungry bellies.
We decided on German pastries (after being introduced to them in Hamburg) and stopped to get a bit of work in and enjoy a coffee right in the town square.
Traveler’s Tip…Lubeck is known for the Lubeck marzipan. A bread that is historically well known for the number of almonds used in making the marzipan.

Lubeck Holstentor | The Gate To The City
Finishing off our time in Lubeck, we walked along the waterfront, the Trave River– one of our favorite things to do in European cities, and were greeted again by another massive surprise… What we later found out to be Lubeck Holstentor – the historic gate to the city.
Traveler’s Tip… this historic gate is now a museum. We were there when the museum was closed, but if you’re looking to learn more about Lubeck’s history, we’ve read great things about this museum!

Lubeck Hotels
There are a couple of major hotels in Lubeck, like the Holiday Inn Lubeck and even some right on the water like the Radisson Blu Lubeck, but honestly with prices up around 100 USD, staying at a big fancy hotel in Lubeck isn’t the best if you’re on a budget!
