Ever since I (Heather) did an internship in Tanzania, I’ve had this odd obsession with doors. No matter where we go, I always am drawn to the doors. Once we began wandering around Marrakech, I couldn’t help but realize how eye-catching Marrakech doors are! Talk about some serious exterior home design goals!

We probably looked quite ridiculous while we wandered around. I would stop, grab Jay’s arm, and we would take a few steps backward to just stare at a random door, down a random alley. Here are twenty doors and doorways of Marrakech we couldn’t help by capture!

The History of Morocco Doors

Morocco doors are more than just a design that people like. The history behind the Moroccan-style doors is insane. Who would have known that different shapes and designs of Moroccan doorways and doors could tell a story? It’s really amazing to think of the detail and thought that goes behind each and every one of these doors in Marrakech. And if you really want to get your mind blown, think, the same attention to detail and thought goes into each and every Morocco door!

Moorish Doors

One very distinct Moroccan door is the Moorish-style doors. The Islamic arch makes the Moorish doors very distinct. This style of door in Morocco came from Spain when the Moorish people came over to Morocco. There are many different types of arches found in Moroccan doors. You’ll see keyhole arches, regular arches, and arches that come to a point. Each of them though shows the Muslim culture in Morocco.

Doors inside Doors

As you’ll see in some of the doors of Marrakech we’ve captured below, oftentimes, you’ll find a door within a door. These doors are supposedly there as a way to show respect when entering someone’s home. The smaller doors make those entering bow below to the top of the door as they enter, a great way to show respect and humble yourself when entering someone else’s place.

Let’s dive into the Morocco travel inspiration found in these Morocco Doors and Doorways…

Moroccan Doorways

I hate to sound posh, but there’s no other word to describe Moroccan Doorways than exquisite. Take a look at the design in these Morocco doorways, and tell me if there is a different word to describe the tile work and woodworking done other than exquisite! Honestly, beautiful doesn’t do justice for the Moroccan architecture below.

Not sure if you can tell completely or not, but this is a doubled archway door with a door at the end with stained glass above. The picture really doesn’t do much justice to this one, as it seems more busy than pretty.

The doorway design at the riads in Marrakech often spill over into plants and pottery on the outside.
