3 Best Fish and Chips in Scotland | A Scottish Food Guide

We traveled over 10,000 miles in Scotland to find the best fish and chips in Scotland. And I think we’ve found them!

Visiting Scotland wouldn’t be complete without having fish and chips. Though fish and chips are thought to have originated in London, there are multiple award-winning chippies throughout Scotland.

After living in Scotland for over two years, most of that time being in a van traveling around the country, we’ve had fish and chips nearly everywhere imaginable.

From the north to the south, east to the west, the Inner and Outer Hebrides, and up into Shetland, these are the best fish and chip in Scotland.

Fish and Chips, Anstruther Fish Bar, chippy shop, Scotland, Great Britain, arboursabroad
Anstruther Fish Bar is located in Anstruther, Scotland just outside of St. Andrews. It’s known well with locals and tourists alike and has some to die for fish and chips.

When Jay was in St. Andrews for five weeks all his coworkers kept telling him he had to try fish and chips at Anstruther Fish Bar. Being only 20 minutes away from St. Andrews, Jay tried it once, and couldn’t resist going back.

When we took our family there, we waited in line for nearly an hour, with kids, and man was it worth it. The fish and chips really do live up to all the hype, and are SO worth the wait! And even better they’re served with bread, butter, and a cup of tea!

This is 1.5 hours away from Edinburgh, but the drive makes it worth it to find the best chippy in Edinburgh… even though it’s not really in the city! Trust us, it’s worth the drive/train ride!

Oban Fish and Chips, Oban chips, chippy, Scotland, food guide, arboursabroad
Our Favorite across Scotland, Oban Fish and Chips! Make sure you visit the one that looks like this, as Oban has a couple different fish and chips shops in town!

Everyone raves about fish and chips in Oban. In fact, most people will say you have to visit Oban to have some of the best fish and chips in Scotland, however, our first two times to Oban we were so disappointed.

The fish and chips we had did not live up to our expectations! It wasn’t until our last time in Oban that we found the fish and chip shop everyone raves about, “Oban Fish and Chips”, and we were completely blown away by how dang good they were.

We both got a fish supper at night, and then went back the next day to grab another before heading out of town – they were that good!

Something about that rapeseed oil they use to fry the fish and the homemade tartar sauce is absolutely drool-worthy! Just make sure you visit the “Oban Fish and Chips Shop”, not one of the others in town.

{Traveler’s Tip… Ask for their homemade tartar sauce. Way better than the prepackaged, and oh, so stinking good!}
