With no real intention of going anywhere specific in Belgium after Gent, we hit the road only to find our route took us near Liege, Belgium. We checked our trusty travel app and quickly learned that Liege was where the liege waffle was created. Hello, a MUST STOP for us.. these are our FAVORITE waffles of all time! Off to Liege, we went!
But, our fairytale dreams of visiting Liege and eating the best waffles around was cut short when one bad thing after the next began to happen within the city. The supposed best waffle place in town was closed as the owners were on holiday, the people at the restaurant we went to were angry that we only ordered one dish to share, and we caught someone trying to break into our van upon returning to it after dinner.
We left Liege feeling defeated, waffleless (is that even a word?), and a bit worried about the potential of something bad happening to our home on wheels! But hey, at least we ate some bomb meatballs with rabbit sauce.
After getting out of town and spending the night at a great park up, we woke up on Sunday feeling refreshed and wanting to give Liege a second shot. Back into town we went, and only good things came this time around!
Arriving in the city there was so much commotion. What seemed like loads of traffic was in fact just cars parked all along the main road of Liege, even parked right in the middle of the main road as the owners of the vehicles were out at the huge Sunday market!
We both looked at each other and smiled, so happy we gave Liege a second chance. Joining the loads of cars, we parked Izzy right along the main road, popped out and began to stroll through the marketplace.
We found spices we only thought existed in South America, onion powder (something we haven’t found anywhere since leaving the states), and bomb.com churros. No waffles to be seen, but we were still happy with our time! We later found out this is one of the largest Sunday markets in Belgium!
The Sunday Market ended right in the cutest area of Liege. A place with only walking streets with traditional outdoor European seating, and a street, known to be from Medieval times, Rue du Carre.
Walking down the medieval street, we can honestly say we were scared the walls were going to crumble in on us! It’s tiny, the walls are leaning in, and there’s this eeriness about it that just makes you want to tinkle in your panties! We couldn’t get to the end of the street quick enough!
After visiting Rue du Carre, we decided to try our luck with finding waffles yet again. And not to our surprise, most places were closed due to it being a Sunday. While we love that the majority of shops are closed every Sunday, we were sent searching far and wide for a Liege waffle!
But good things come from wandering aimlessly through a city…
We found a staircase that had more than 370 steps leading up to the hillside of Liege. Never would we ever want to climb to the top of that staircase in the middle of summer, but it was nice to see from the bottom!
Just as we were heading back to the van and giving up on the hopes of finding a true Liege waffle, something sweet smelling caught our attention, and we knew if we followed our noses, we would soon be treated with a little taste of deliciousness! Right along the water, we found a little bakery serving up some traditional Liege waffles.
We each got one, Heather dropped hers on the ground and nearly cried, but Jay took one for the team and ate it anyway, and when we finished eating the waffles we went and got one more! They were so good, and after having them, we finally felt like we could get back on the road and move on to the next country!
Where To Park And Stay In Liege
Like we said in the beginning of this post, while in Liege, we caught someone trying to break into the van. His excuse was he needed water, but still nonetheless, not cool! After researching more about Liege upon encountering that man, we learned that car break-ins are quite common in the city. With that said, we definitely recommend parking for the night outside of Liege.
There’s a free place to park about 20 minutes outside the city, and even offers electricity, water, and dumping for a small fee! By clicking here, or searching for Charbonnage de Blegny-Mine you can find the parking lot to camp in! There was loads of other campers there when we went, but still found it to fell cozy! Some people were even camped there for a few days having chairs and tables set outside their campers!
As far as parking in the city goes, there are both paid for and free options within the city as well. Again, you have to be careful where you park with the common occurrence of break-ins. We found free parking on Rue des Aveugles, however, this is where the man was trying to break into our car while we were out to dinner, so not sure we can recommend parking there!
How To Get Around Liege
Liege is supposedly Belgium’s third largest city, but while visiting we thought it felt quite small. Though we must say, we only visited one small area of the city itself. We found that getting around by foot was the best way for us, and didn’t see cyclists as you usually would in Belgian cities.
This is probably due to the steep elevations throughout the city itself. There’s public transportation and parking garages scattered throughout, so we recommend using the city’s transport system, or simply visiting the desired area by foot.
