Birria Tacos Puerto Vallarta FAQs
What are Birria Tacos Puerto Vallarta?
Birria tacos are a taco in Puerto Vallarta made with birria meat. Birria is a stewed meat traditionally made from goat or sheep, but now more often made from beef.
Where is birria from in Mexico?
Birria originated in the state of Jalisco… aka, in the area of / surrounding Puerto Vallarta.
Are birria tacos healthy?
Yes and No! The liquid or broth that the meat cooks in for hours is meant to be very good for stomach aches and headaches… hence why they’re considered breakfast tacos (a good taco after a night out drinking). We can attest to them being good when having an upset stomach and feeling better almost immediately after!
How to eat Birria Tacos?
You can order birria tacos banditos (regular) or dorados (fried). And then with or without the consome (the broth). We like to get them dorados con consome (fried with broth) and then dip them in the consome, pour the consome inside each bite, and drink what consome is left over at the end!
What is so special about Birria tacos in Puerto Vallarta?
Honestly, you need to try them to know! But it’s a must when in Puerto Vallarta because they’re from this region of Mexico, and besides them being amazing, it’s nice to try the local dishes!

Best Birria Tacos Puerto Vallarta
Unlike finding the best al pastor in Puerto Vallarta, we are super undecided about the best birria tacos in Puerto Vallarta. There are four birria taco stands that really stand out to us… and two that are good, but not great.
We’re sharing them all below, with what makes them great, not so great, and absolute musts!
Taqueria Lupita’s

Expected Price | 25 MXN pesos per taco

Prices at Taqueria Lupita’s
- 25 MXN pesos per taco
- 60 MXN pesos per quesadilla
- 20 MXN pesos per cup of consome
- 100 MXN pesos for platter of birria meat
Living in the 5 de Diciembre neighborhood means that Taqueria Lupita’s is one of our local birria taco places in Puerto Vallarta. And, we’ve got to say we’re stoked about that!
Taqueria Lupita’s birria in our opinion is better than the birria tacos in the Romantic Zone!
The servers here are always super nice, the food is consistently good, and they have some of the highest sanitation protocols we’ve seen for street tacos in Mexico.

We always order our birria tacos dorados (or fried) and they are mouth-watering good every single time.
Taqueria Lupita’s is right on the corner of Ley, a supermarket in Puerto Vallarta, and it’s always busy with people no matter what time of day.
We suggest getting tacos de birria dorados con todos here.. which means fried tacos with onion, cilantro, and cabbage! Their sauces are super great too, although honestly, you don’t need them!
Lupita’s Tacos de Woolworth

This taco stand is run by the sweetest family, and we have been here multiple times and even taken friends here.
We love their promo deal, which comes with three tacos, a cup of consome, and a drink. The flavor of the consome and birria meat is unreal!
The tacos are a bit smaller than the other Lupita’s Taqueria above, and the shells are a bit crispier, but with the consome it’s fabulous!

Lupitas Tacos de Woolworth is the place we got hooked on having the consome with our birria tacos.
Here is where we learned it’s good for stomach aches and headaches.. and that a lot of people eat / drink it after a late night out!
This taco stand gets its name from the Woolworth Department store it sits outside, which is a great place to go in an enjoy some AC if you’re overheating in Puerto Vallarta.
Be sure to squeeze in some fresh lime and add a little bit of salt to your consome to really bring out the rich flavors!
Tacos de Birria Chanfay
Popular Birria with Table Seating
Coordinates | 20.603364, -105.233282
Opening Times | Sunday | 9:00am – 1:00pm | Monday – Saturday | 9:00am – 3:00pm
Expected Price | 25 MXN per taco

Prices at Tacos de Birria Chanfay
- 22 MXN pesos per taco
Tacos de Birria Chanfay offers a street taco experience in Puerto Vallarta without actually eating on the street. It’s more of an outdoor Mexican restaurant feel.
They have a large covered area tucked in between two buildings, making it the perfect place to stop to escape the sun — it’s also a nicer dining experience, with tables, though still street style and street prices!
This place is always busy, and sometimes, you’ll even have to wait in a line — but trust us, they’re worth the wait!

Everything about Tacos de Birria Chanfay is perfect! The price is right, the food is amazing, and the portions are huge!
This was our very first experience with birria tacos in Puerto Vallarta, and it was one for the books!
We ordered both dorados and blanditos here, and can say we like the dorados (fried) ones better. The blanditos tacos seemed to fall apart because of all the liquid broth.
The green salsa here is made with jalapeños, but don’t let that scare you from trying it.. it’s bomb!
Birria de Robles
Great Option Near Birria Chanfay
Coordinates | 20.603648, -105.233845
Opening Times | morning through late afternoon
Expected Price | 20 MXN per taco

Prices at Birria de Robles
- 280 MXN pesos for ten tacos and four agua frescas
Birria de Robles is a smaller birria stand in the Romantic Zone serving up birria tacos with lots of topping options and large agua frescas.
It’s nowhere near as busy as the neighboring birria taco stands and offers more of an authentic street food experience.
There’s a table and chairs to enjoy birria tacos at, which is always a bonus with taco stands in Puerto Vallarta.

If we’re being honest here, we stopped at Birria de Robles because we went to Birria de Chanfay and it was closed.
However, we’re kinda glad it was so we were able to experience this taco stand too. It’s right around the corner from Chanfay, and is open a bit later.
The tacos here aren’t as full of birria meat, but the extra topping options make up for the lack of meat. The flavor is great and the people who run this stand are friendly!
Oh! And the agua frescas!! They were so good and actually a lot bigger than most chica agua frescas in Puerto Vallarta.
Taco Richy’s
Great Birria Next to Boca Bus Stop
Coordinates | 20.602246, -105.234766
Opening Times | morning through late lunch
Expected Price | 20 MXN per taco

Prices at Tacos Richy
- 20 MXN pesos per taco
If you’re taking a bus and heading south from Puerto Vallarta to places like Yelapa and Los Colomitos Beach, make sure to grab tacos from Tacos Richy first!
This is a small taco stand right at the bus stop, and is probably one of the most authentic taco stands in Puerto Vallarta we visited.

We popped into Tacos Richy when we were visiting Palo Maria Waterfall south of Puerto Vallarta. It ended up being a delicious breakfast snack to have before the hike!
Ordering from and eating at Tacos Richy was one of the more authentic experiences we had in Puerto Vallarta, and the workers were so happy we popped over for some tacos!
They’re located right at the bus stop to Boca, so stopping in while you wait for the bus is perfect!
Birria MX
Late Night Birria Tacos
Coordinates | 20.604087, -105.236031
Opening Times | morning through late evening
Expected Price | 20 MXN per taco

Prices at Birria MX
- 20 MXN pesos per taco
We’ll be the first to say, we should have known to not get birria here when it’s served late at night!
Birria is traditionally a breakfast food, so a place that serves it at night is a red flag to it not being so great.. and that held true.

We were craving some birria tacos late at night, so when we stumbled across Birria MX we were super happy.
We ordered two birria tacos and a birria burrito here, and all of it was flavorless and just not at all what you would expect.
To be fair, we ordered late at night — so maybe it was the last of it or just not the best time to get birria. However, it’s a place we won’t go back to.
