Maastricht is a city in the very south of The Netherlands. Most people visit Maastricht when traveling from Belgium into Germany. We visited the city with one goal in mind.. to find ourselves some Dutch pancakes, and although we left without getting any delicious pancakes in our bellies, we were so happy we got to visit Maastricht, a southern city full of all the Dutch charm!
Wondering around the city in search of Dutch pancakes made us run into quite a few cute little areas and buildings within Maastricht, leading us to this little post of things to see while visiting Maastricht!
Fueling Your Dutch Wanderlust | Time To Visit Maastricht
The Van Bommel Cafe
Stopping at Van Bommel Cafe, we were hoping to get some insights on where to get Dutch pancakes in the city, but the bartender informed us at that hour, there really wouldn’t be a place to get them… So instead, we decided to have a couple pints. After all, we couldn’t leave this cozy café without enjoying the interior design!

Wihelminabrug Bridge
Man, entering Maastricht over this bridge was a real treat. The bridge itself is pretty, but the views from it are nicer! If you’re not on a bike, still make the walk to the Wihelminabrug Bridge! You won’t be disappointed.

Maastricht’s Town Hall | Stadhuis
European town halls never, ever disappoint. And Maastricht’s Town Hall sits in the middle of a square with cafes all around. The square becomes full of locals drinking beer in the evenings and people zipping through on their bikes!

Saint-Janskerk’s Red Steeple
We’re not really sure why this steeple is painted red, but it certainly makes it stand out amongst the buildings it’s around. It stands tall and bright, right in the middle of the city!

Saint Servaasbasiliek
This church building is massive in the midst of Maastricht. With not much room in the area, it seems the city has overtaken the church, but that’s one of our favorite parts about Europe. The fact that churches are here, there, and everywhere, even when you least expect it makes wandering around a city like Maastricht so fun!

Behind The Churches
Just behind Saint Servaasbasiliek, you’ll find a historic part of Maastricht. Stand in the midst of the old buildings in wonder of what this place used to be like! And even try counting the arches in the area… we’re still wondering what they were all for!

Treasury Of The Basilica of Saint Servatius
This little museum will leave you wondering why in the world it is where it is.. Like honestly, how did it get there? It doesn’t match the architecture it’s literally touching, and seems so out of place!

Cozy European Street Vibe
Maastricht is full of tiny streets and walking areas. They’re busy and crowded with mopeds and bicycles zipping through, but they’re still cozy and even romantic. If it’s warm enough out, grab something to eat or a beer outside. Otherwise, simply enjoy wandering the streets of Maastricht.
We ended up having quite a quick trip visiting Maastricht. As we got lost about one-thousand times trying to figure out how to get in the city with all the tunnel systems making us lose our GPS connection. But regardless, we were so glad to stop in and enjoy this city full of Dutch love!
If you’ve been to Maastricht, or have any tips of where else to visit in the city, let us know! We may return one day and think, shoot there’s so much more to see when you don’t get in late on hungry stomachs! 😉

Getting Around Maastricht
When we visited Maastricht, we went rather late in the evening and stuck to really one area of the city. In the area this post is about, we recommend getting around by foot. Everything is relatively close, and if you just ride a bike into the center (like the town hall) you can reach everything quite quickly by foot.
There were taxis and mopeds all around, and we even saw public transportation in other parts of Maastricht, but again by foot is totally recommended to see everything in this post!
Where To Stay In Maastricht
If you’re on a European Roadtrip, and are looking for a place to park overnight, there’s a large parking lot on the outskirts of the city that we found perfectly suitable to stay overnight in. There were other people staying overnight there as well, and without height or time restrictions on parking in this area, it’s perfect! You can find the exact coordinates to this parking lot below.

Someone also recommended an old rock quarry to us, though we didn’t actually stay there, so we can’t say how good it is for a park-up for the night. You can find the exact coordinates for the quarry outside of Maastricht below.

Hands down, without a doubt our favorite city of all time is Gent. It’s got a college town vibe without the young college town feel. Does that even make sense?! The food’s great, and the canals through the city make it so romantic. Check out this post with caution, as we’re sure you’ll want to visit this city too!
